Fondation Trip

..And we're back!
Unfortunately, as expected, the excursion to Chateau La Coste (see previous post) did not happen. What did happen though was a fantastic outing to the Fondation Maeght, a much easier trip, as it happens to be just behind our house.

A true museum in nature, the Maeght Foundation is an exceptional site that contains one of the most important collections in Europe, with paintings, sculptures, drawings and graphic works of art from the 20th century (Bonnard, Braque, Calder, Chagall, Chillida, Giacometti, Léger, Miró...) and contemporary artists (Adami, Kelly, Kuroda, Monory, Tàpies). Not only so, but it is a spectacular space to take children, toddlers in particular. The galleries are vast and sparse, the gardens a maze of sculptures to be touched, climbed on and explored. One of my favorite cultural destinations which never gets old. http://www.fondation-maeght.com/

One particular installation had us, children and adults both, entertained for a long, long time. It was the installation by artist Jesús Rafael Soto, Pénétrable, 1992. A maze of fluorescent nylon strands which made for some great optical illusions and tireless hide and seek.

Vive la France

Given our impending trip to France this evening I thought that rather than concentrate on the trip ahead (9 hours alone with a squirming toddler) I would look to what's ahead. Located in Le Puy-Sainte-Reparade, the Chateau La Coste Winery is one of a kind. It is, first and foremost, a beautiful piece of countryside, but so much more than that, it is a combination of some of the world's most famous architects' efforts coming together.

Among these works of art there are sculptures by Richard Serra, James Turrell and more of which I hope to bring back first hand images, but in case I get lugged down by the festivities and I don't we can at least wallow in these professional images.
